Jesus as the Lamb of God

Passage: John 1:19-34

Today is the Day of Atonement known to the Jews as ‘Yom Kippor’

Two goats …doctrine of substitution – someone in my place and doctrine of expiation – my sins are gone ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.’ (John 1:29)

A prophetic slant … cf. Zechariah 12:10-13:1 Yom Kippur: Jesus is our Saviour and our Scapegoat

Now: Is Jesus God’s scapegoat or Lamb?

Jesus Christ is all these:

  • The Spotless Lamb,
  • the Scapegoat,
  • the Bronze Serpent….

The emphasize falls on the “take away”, “removal of sins”

Why then John chooses Lamb?

  1. Innocence and harmless
  2. Meekness and patience doesn’t strive fight back
  3. Most lovely delightful creature
  4. Cleanliness (amongst most pure meat)
  5. Usefulness (meat and wool)
