Jesus as the Lamb of God
Today is the Day of Atonement known to the Jews as ‘Yom Kippor’
Two goats …doctrine of substitution – someone in my place and doctrine of expiation – my sins are gone ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.’ (John 1:29)
A prophetic slant … cf. Zechariah 12:10-13:1 Yom Kippur: Jesus is our Saviour and our Scapegoat
Now: Is Jesus God’s scapegoat or Lamb?
Jesus Christ is all these:
- The Spotless Lamb,
- the Scapegoat,
- the Bronze Serpent….
The emphasize falls on the “take away”, “removal of sins”
Why then John chooses Lamb?
- Innocence and harmless
- Meekness and patience doesn’t strive fight back
- Most lovely delightful creature
- Cleanliness (amongst most pure meat)
- Usefulness (meat and wool)
